Naïveté about ET Contact Could Be Dangerous
When it comes to assessing a potential ET threat, we should pay attention to the signs.
I used to be somewhat dismissive of the idea of UFOs and ETs posing a threat to humanity. Coming to this topic via metaphysical circles meant that my introduction to other forms of consciousness and intelligent life was steeped in “light and love.” Interacting with benevolent, higher dimensional beings via their human channels, as well as my own experiences, shaped an overwhelmingly positive perspective on the question of why beings from beyond are engaging with our species. But in broadening my gaze and asking critical questions based on a fuller data set, I see the flaws in my thinking. Blind trust in the benevolence of ET visitors, particularly those arriving in physical form, is not only naive but potentially dangerous.
It is easy to romanticize the notion of “first” contact. As a species with a legacy of war and struggle, who flirts with the path to ecological collapse and great human suffering, it is natural to fantasize about a little help from beyond. It is also reasonable to believe that beings who have the technology to come here and who have yet to use that technology in an overtly aggressive way, like invading a city, are here for our benefit or at least mean us no harm. In my case, because the mentoring and support I received from benevolent beings led to many positive changes in my life, it was understandable that I might extrapolate my individual loving experience to the whole. But again, that would be an error.
Friend and Foe
My own experiences aside, many in the field acknowledge there are likely “friendlies” and allies who are looking out for us and want to help us be the awakened and free beings we have the potential to be. But I am increasingly concerned that there is a sizable contingent of ETs who are here for their own gains, who don’t look at us as brothers or sisters but as means to their own ends. Whether that is exploiting the Earth’s resources, stealing our biological resources, or using our planet as an outpost, their presence and the secrecy around it violates our human sovereignty and poses significant risk. The fact that we don’t know who they are and why they are here means we have not consented as a people, even if a few in our governments have.
Accepting that we likely have friends and foes adds layers of complexity and confusion to an open contact event. Will the first ones to make themselves unequivocally known be those who want to ensure a peaceful and harmonious introduction to the galactic community? Or will they be preempted by those who perhaps already have commercial and strategic interests here? The Allies of Humanity briefings make this point:
As has occurred in your world in your own history, the first to reach the new lands are the explorers and the conquerors. They do not come for altruistic reasons. They come seeking power, resources and dominion.
For this reason, the aspirations of many believers for the first open contact to be illuminating and uplifting could clash with a troubling reality that we, as the indigenous people of Planet Earth, have been chosen for a form of colonization. Far from the kumbaya moment many hope for, first contact has the potential to be incredibly disorienting, destabilizing, and even desperate as we try to make sense of what is going on and what threat might have arrived on our shores. For even if they come to exploit us, their tactics may be designed to get us to believe otherwise. Smallpox blankets anyone?
Faced with being in the dark, discernment is our best defense. In this context, discernment is the ability to separate those who have positive intentions from those who don’t. This demands that we be shrewd, sober in our assessments, and self-aware of our biases, hopes, and fear. When we consider that some races may have the ability to manipulate our minds and even project false images into our reality, the task of discernment can seem daunting.
How would we know who or what to believe?
Red Flags
Should we find ourselves needing to distinguish friend from foe, I developed criteria to help assess the situation. I note that my intention is that these criteria be applied to individual beings or situations, as opposed to classifying entire races. We risk misjudging a situation, positively or negatively, if we rely on generalities.
We should be suspicious if those we physically encounter on our planet exhibit the following behaviors:
Withhold full information on who they are, why they are here, and the extent of their engagement
Promise to save us from ourselves or offer quick fixes to our problems
Tempt us with technology that we are not prepared to constructively deploy
Refuse to consent to and honor measures to protect our sovereignty, like not removing people or materials from the planet without appropriate permissions
Promote conformity and uniformity over individual thought and expression
Foster conflict and division among nations
Seek our compliance, submission, or allegiance to their agenda
Demean or undermine human capabilities, integrity, and freedom
In contrast, we should recognize our friends and allies because they treat us as peers and seek reciprocal relationships of mutual benefit. When we ask the question of “What is in it for us?” the answer should be clear and commensurate to whatever benefit they seek. Similarly, our friends would not put themselves in a situation to be worshiped, feared, or depended on. Whatever they have to teach us will empower us and support our sovereignty, helping us expand our human potential not limit it. It should be obvious to us that they respect us and want to see us succeed. As in my personal experiences, we should experience love and compassion, not manipulation and fear.
Some may ask why our benevolent, enlightened allies don’t intervene to protect us from those who would subjugate us. Perhaps they are or will in some way. But the Allies of Humanity briefings put it this way:
Even a benevolent society, should they come to your world, would have such an influence and such an impact upon you that you would become dependent upon them and would not establish your own strength, your own power and your own self-sufficiency. You would be so reliant upon their technology and upon their understanding that they would not be able to leave you. And indeed, their arrival here would make you even more vulnerable to interference in the future.
Essentially, in offering their help, they would be undermining our autonomy and establishing themselves as our protectors. Again, our own world history proves instructive. However tempting a bailout might be, it would not serve us in the long term. Our future is up to us.
Keep Calm and Think Critically
Admittedly, it is depressing for me to think that the movies I made in my head about how wonderful and beautiful mass contact could be might be overwritten by a story much more bleak and dire. At least at first. I do agree with those who say that it is part of the destiny of every civilization to discover that they are not alone and to join the galactic community. Over the long term, I see the trajectory of humankind as navigating upward. But we may be approaching a critical threshold that will determine how bumpy a ride that is.
Objectivity and calm, rational response is the right approach no matter how we discover, en masse, that we are not alone. If our friends come out first, they shouldn’t be offended by a robust vetting. If we are met first by foes, that vetting and the willingness to withhold judgment until the facts become clear may be the difference between one course of action or another, which could determine how well contact plays out for us. In all cases, thinking critically and accepting the clarity that comes will help us know what to do. In the meantime, government disclosure of everything that is known can help us understand and prepare for what we might expect.
