Should We Trust a Galactic Federation?

If there is a Galactic Federation, they probably have an agenda. We should tread carefully if we value human sovereignty.

The idea of a Galactic Federation has been around for a while, especially among Star Trek fans, but it was the mention of it in a December 2020 interview with the former head of Israel’s space program, Haim Eshed, that catapulted it to public awareness. While Eshed’s claims that there is a real Galactic Federation and it has signed agreements with the US government were widely dismissed by popular media as hearsay or a publicity stunt for his book, the questions of whether there is a Galactic Federation and if there is, what role they play for humanity, remain unanswered.

The likelihood of there being a Galactic Federation is quite high. The assumptions that feed into that hypothesis are: (1) we are not alone, (2) there are many civilizations present in the universe, and (3) there would be valid reasons to form organizations, councils, and alliances. Just as human societies form relationships for a variety of purposes, be it governance, commerce, information exchange, or shared interests, it seems plausible that other intelligent beings would seek the same thing. Because we are a young civilization compared to many others, perhaps that merits some additional monitoring.

If we accept that there could be a Galactic Federation that is interested in humanity, what would their purpose be? Speculation results in a number of possibilities. For example, they could be a group of concerned benevolent beings who have been with us from the beginning to stand guard and make sure that we don’t wipe ourselves out or destroy our planet. They could be observers from across the universe watching our world for entertainment or research. Perhaps they are a business association interested in Earth and humanity for commercial aims. In a worst case scenario, perhaps they are malevolent plotters waiting for the perfect moment to stage a planetary takeover.

A cruise across YouTube reveals dozens of people who claim to speak on behalf of the Galactic Federation, sometimes referred to as the Galactic Federation of Light (GFL). The number of people claiming contact with the federation and the variance in message is obviously problematic, but for whatever it is worth, the general consensus of these messengers seems to be that the Galactic Federation is a coalition of well-intentioned beings from different star systems and galactic locales who came together to oversee Earth and us. They hover around Earth in spaceships keeping an eye on things and helping us out, even if that help is invisible to us. In other words, according to these messengers, the Galactic Federation assumes some responsibility for what happens here.

Galactic Overreach?

For some people, having galactic parents might be a comforting thought. It might be a relief to believe that someone else is ultimately responsible for our future and we just have to follow their lead to a better world. But this is exactly what makes me uneasy.

What does human freedom and sovereignty mean if we abdicate our responsibilities to someone else, be it a Galactic Federation, a deity, or AI robots?

A popular YouTuber who claims to be a channel for the Galactic Federation posted a video on March 1, 2021 about the pandemic where she said:

Something that the GFL told me that really stood out and really resonated was related to the fact that if they didn’t want this to happen, it wouldn’t have happened. They have the ability to shut this down, they have the ability to, to basically stop. They could have stopped…all this shit that we went through in 2020.

Whether this woman is credible is an open question, but for purposes of this thought exercise, let’s assume this is an accurate message and the pandemic proceeded because they allowed it. She goes on to explain why the GFL “let” this happen, but that misses my point.

Why would a group of benevolent beings think they are in charge of what happens on Earth? Why would the pandemic, or any human event, be their call? Who gave them that level of influence over our lives?

One doesn’t need to watch many episodes of Ancient Aliens to hear the repeated storyline that beings came down from the skies in prehistoric times and dazzled us with wisdom and technology. In light of their gifts, our ancestors worshiped them as gods. Some of those beings may have liked that. But as continues with modern religion, assigning authority and responsibility to outside entities disempowers us and makes us more susceptible to control. Religions rely on that to serve their agenda. The same might be true of the Galactic Federation.

Ask for the Agenda

Who knows what the Galactic Federation’s agenda or agendas might be although they have one. Presumably, those comprising the federation are not angels or interdimensional beings hanging out in the highest realms. They are physical beings living a material existence, navigating their own evolution. They may be older than us and more technologically advanced, but still being in physical form suggests that they are dwelling in neighboring levels of consciousness. Thus, some of what typically motivates us might also motivate them. That alone should give us pause.

Their intentions could be largely benevolent and beneficial toward us, not because they are selflessly devoted to our well-being but because what is good for humanity’s evolution might also benefit the larger cosmos we are a part of. Perhaps it will turn out that we share a common goal or common enemy. But we should assume that there is something commensurate that they are getting or want in return. As originally noted in Are Aliens Friend or Foe…or Both?, author Richard Dolan makes the valid point that any civilization engaging here can be expected to look out for their own interests, just like we would.

This is not necessarily a bad thing. Perhaps there is some form of interplanetary trade that would be a win-win or there would be some other advantage to humanity to joining such a federation. But these types of decisions should be made by the human collective based on a transparent understanding of what these beings bring to the table and what they hope to achieve. If and when we engage with them, it should be as peers with our own full standing, not as children in need of babysitting. And it should not happen behind closed doors with the US government in charge of representing us or reporting back.

Trust But Verify

This is not a suggestion to take a hostile approach toward the Galactic Federation. They very well could be useful friends and allies. The takeaway here is to beware of seeking saviors and being enamored with any who may show up to save us from ourselves. What happens on Earth is our decision. We may make some terrible choices but they are ours to make. As philosopher Francis Ponge said, “Man is the future of man.”

This doesn’t mean we should reject any and all help that arrives but we should retain the right to choose the help we want and the help we don’t. We should understand what is being given and what they want in return. We have the right to demand transparency from those who engage here, as well as any human governments that engage with them.

It all comes back to discernment and an individual decision on how much influence we want to allow these other civilizations to have on our affairs. Humanity has a long history of submitting to control because it seems easier and less scary than figuring things out on our own. But we do not want to trade one master for another. If the Galactic Federation is truly looking out for our best interests, they will not seek to intervene without invitation and without full disclosure of who they are and why they seek a relationship with us. Real friends would readily offer that up.
